The artist created and developed Miss Norma’s Barn through the vision he would see through the requested description for a commissioned acrylic on canvas.

The request for the painting did not guide how the painting developed. Rather, it drew from what the artist brought to the table. The artist shaped the painting based on what he heard and felt about the story line he was given.

How Miss Norma’s Barn Came to Be

Themes that are strongly pervasive in and around the art world in general. But this barn, Miss Norma’s Barn, would be much different than the ordinary. For Miss Norma is no ordinary soul.

This “Miss Norma” is a special soul. A woman of life’s most difficult trials. Indeed, trials of hardship, loss, and betrayal. But a soul that overcame it all! One who is a “conqueror” of the obstacles that were laid in her pathway through life. One who chose to overcome the game she had been faced with. Even so, the cards she had been dealt.

The Tale of Miss Norma’s Barn

It’s a long one, this “tale” of Miss Norma’s Barn! For if you had experienced the pleasure of sitting in her presence just but for a moment, you would find the life behind the particular painting. You would observe the many typical red barn photos and paintings she had spread across every wall in her humble abode.

To be sure, “typical” in the way that you’d expect to see barns in the countryside. But the thought of painting just another red barn didn’t really fit with what she was representing in her life of late years. Still, well over eighty-plus years, she is standing strong! Bold in every sense of the word. She has, in every way, stood as a testament of her inner determination, her faith within, and all that defines perseverance of struggle through life.

The vibrant yellow with a slight blue-green touch of sky highlights the distinguished greenery life that surrounds the old barn. A barn that, to say the least, has seen plenty of use. It’s been through turbulent times, both through inured weather and seemingly devoid periods of time. Time that takes its toll on nearly anything and everyone that would take it to challenge. But it is, after all, still standing!

Notwithstanding, in the grayness of its shadow highlights its determination to withstand anything that crosses its path. The years of cold and frigid air, countered only by the heat of the dry day. The kind of heat that drains energy from the living. The kind of challenges from the elements along its life’s path that can create the leaks in our covering. The dilapidation that can sometimes create a feeling within that everything is about to cave in on us.

The Analogy

Yet, its dominant presence is not only seen, but felt. While the roofing may show need of repair, and the doorways seem to be at the end of their usefulness, the barn itself still stands. Though in the background, it establishes a presence as if it is, indeed, the forefront of the painting. Just as is with Miss Norma herself!

In the foreground lies stumps, as if they were piled together, is all of what remains of the tall timber that once overshadowed Miss Norma’s barn. That once provided cover from the hot elements that showed up annually to challenge the fortitude of the barn itself. A testament of the endurance of the barn to outlive its own surroundings.
